I offer a range of editorial services:
see below / the tabs above; click each item for more details
Because clients' needs vary, so do my rates. I’ve listed the minimum cost as guidance, and a quote will be provided once I’ve assessed sample material and understand the level of editing/feedback you’re looking for.
I’m very happy to answer questions if you have them; I offer a complimentary 20-minute call to discuss the various packages if you’re not sure which is right for you.
Alternatively, a more in-depth one-hour call can be booked here as part of the book coaching packages I offer.
Ahead of the longer call, you’re welcome to send over info/your query so I can assess before we speak.
I can provide a sample edit if required. There is a £50 one-off charge for one hour of sample editing, redeemable against the fee total should you choose to go ahead with that specific service afterwards.
I am happy to provide a sample edit if required. There is a £50 one-off charge for one hour of sample editing.
This can be redeemed against the fee total should you choose to go ahead with that specific service.
If you have requested more than one sample edit, only the fee for the service being progressed can be redeemed against that particular service. The other sample edit fees are non-refundable.
You are not obliged to take up a service after a sample edit. If you choose not to, the sample edit fee is non-refundable.
Overseas clients
I’m very happy to accept work from clients who live outside the UK. In order to ensure the payment received matches the fee exactly, I recommend using my Wise business account. (Wise is typically cheaper than traditional banks, especially for international transfers, and it’s a very transparent service.)
Are you ready to approach agents and want to ensure your submission material is doing your project justice and helping you stand out from the slush pile?
As part of the Submission Package Assessment, I will give advice on the following, writing a report with my thoughts:
agent letter
1-page synopsis
First 8,000 words (line edit)
Price: £350
Payment stages:
£100 booking fee to schedule the project
the remaining balance to be paid by bank transfer by the project commencement date.

During an editorial assessment (also known as a reader’s report) I read your project, and write a report with feedback on areas like: themes, plot/characters if fiction, pace, positioning, structure, giving my thoughts on what I feel is working, and where there is scope to improve, with top-level suggestions about recommended next steps.
Price:
from £10 per 1,000 words
final price to be confirmed after I have assessed sample material; I’m happy to do this before you commit to booking / paying the booking fee
Payment stages:
£100 booking fee to schedule the project
the remaining balance split half on project commencement and half on completion, to be paid by bank transfer. The project will be returned to you following receipt of the final payment.

Developmental Editing (one round)
This editing stage concentrates on the project's big-picture arc, and drills down into specific areas, like:
Fiction: themes, plot, character development, pace, positioning, structure
Non-fiction: argument, organisation, tone, audience engagement, positioning/target audience
I'd write a report on these areas, and in addition I’d mark up the MS with queries and comments as I went through.

Line edit
I work at a line level in this edit, looking at the language used, and tightening up sentence structure (keeping in mind the author's style), suggesting cuts where necessary, correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation throughout, ensuring consistency and looking at the pace of the text and whether it flows as well as possible, identifying any areas that could be improved.
I will create a style sheet that maps out the style I’ve enforced, preferred spelling, character details etc for consistency. This is very useful for the proofreading stage, and also if you are planning a series.

The copy-edit stage concentrates mostly on the mechanics and the technical aspects of the MS (spelling, grammar, punctuation, consistency), and I would make additional suggestions as appropriate.
